Phuket

Early in the morning, a taxi picked us up and took us to the airport where we boarded a plane for Phuket via Bangkok.

In Phuket, TAT set us up with a bungalow for 3 nights. The place is all right, but the location isn’t that great. But, it does have a pool, which is handy since it is so freaking hot in southern Thailand. Winter indeed…

Now is the point in our travels where we do a whole lot of nothing. In 3 days we didn’t accomplish much besides lying on the beach and reading. Darcy did rent a motorbike for one day and schlepped me around to a few beaches on the back of it. I think she wants one for trekking over to the east side back in Portland. We’ll have to see about that. It would screw up our whole anti-car thing.

Phuket has some pretty nice beaches. Everything is very touristy though. It reminds me a lot of Maui. I’ve also seen a lot of bare breasts here, which is surprising. All the reading I’ve done says going topless is a no-no, but I guess the tourists are running the show down here.

Another day, we hired a boat to haul us out to Coral Island. The guy dropped us off at a small beach where we were the only people for a while. It was pretty nice. Darcy tried to snorkel, but gave up because the waves were too strong.

Next, the guy took us to the other side of the island to a larger beach. There were more people, but there was still plenty of room to stretch out.

Back on the main island, we hung out and watched the sunset.

There you have it. That was 3 days. Not too exciting. I’ve noticed that the heat has sucked out all my motivation. All I want to do is lie on the beach and expend the minimum amount of energy possible.

In the morning a minibus picked us up and took us to the pier for our boat to Koh Phi Phi. It was morning rush hour so we saw a million scooters on the road. Crazy!

Life is tough at the beach.
