Ayuthaya

After Bangkok, we took a train up to Ayuthaya, which is the ancient capital of Thailand. Ayuthaya is a modern city, but around every corner there are ancient ruins. We settled into our guesthouse then spent the day walking through the ruins and visiting various wats.

One of the highlights was visiting Wihaan Phra Mongkhon Bophit, which houses an enormous seated Buddha that has recently been restored to its original splendor after being destroyed by the Burmese.

Another highlight was visiting the 3 chedi at Wat Phra Si Sanphet.

We also visited a market and drank Leo beer from a straw.

In the evening we walked through the city and came across a large group of people exercising outside to some bad dance tunes. They invited us to join, but we declined. I wouldn’t want to blow them away with my mad dancing skills.

Next, we take an overnight bus up north to Chiang Mai.
