Darcy and I rented bikes at Central Station and rode them to our hostel in Vondelpark, We didn’t really know how to get there, but we knew the general direction. We accidentally rode right into the central part of the city. After about 10 minutes of riding we stopped at a light and Darcy pulled up next to me.
“I think that is one of the coolest things I’ve ever seen”, she said.
Riding through Amsterdam was amazing! There is full accommodation for bicycles, including dedicated lanes and roads, bicycle traffic signals, turn lanes for bicycles, etc… It appears that the city engineers have given priority to bicycles and pedestrians rather than automobiles. And for good reason. Pedestrians and bicycles are everywhere. It is quite the feeling riding in formation with a mob of 20+ bicycles down the street. The only other time I’ve experienced this feeling is during Critical Mass in Minneapolis. Except, this is a daily occurrence. Critical Mass only occurs once a month.
After checking into our hostel, we went to the Van Gogh Museum then grabbed lunch at a neighborly brown bar next to Singelgracht Canal (Café Buiten/Binnen). I had an egg on toast and a Heineken. Darcy had some tomato basil soup. Delicious!
We didn’t spend much time in Amsterdam up front, since we plan on spending Queen’s Day (April 30) there. I need to purchase an orange shirt.
