We woke up around 4:30 am in order to catch our 6:00 train from Sarlat. We checked out of the hotel (by hanging the key on a nail by the front door) and walked to the train station. It was an interesting walk through the medieval city since it was not yet light and there wasn’t a sound in the air. By the time we reached the station, the birds had begun to sing.
Sarlat - leaving the morning of 4-12 002
We took a train from Sarlat to Le Buison, Le Buison to Agen, Agen to Marseille, then Marseille to Nice. It was a full day of travel. We didn’t arrive in Nice until about 7:00 in the evening.
Sleep lines are sexy
We immediately searched out a place to stay. The area right south of the station is filled with budget hotels. Most had their prices listed on the window, so we had our choice. After checking out the looks of about 4 hotels, we came across Hotel Darcy. We decided we had to stay there.
Hotel Darcy!!!
Our room contained three single beds. There was a common bathroom and shower in the hall. The place was a total dive! It did have a cool floor to ceiling window that opened to the bustling street below. Not a bad place. I’m sure my mom would freak out if she ever had to stay in a place like this.
Nice
After checking into the hotel, we searched out a place that had WiFi. We found Le Grand Café de Lyon that had WiFi for Є1.50 per half hour. It turns out that they wouldn’t let us pay for the Internet service, but gave us three tickets each for 15 minutes free. 45 minutes wasn’t quite enough so we would have to try again tomorrow.
After using the Internet and having a biére, we walked back toward the hotel. We stopped in for some grub at a walkup café selling pizza, kebabs, and sandwiches. We split a pizza and a Coca-Cola Light for Є5. The people there were really nice and spoke a little English. We had a brief conversation about languages, then ate our pizza on the patio next to the street. The guys at the counter continued to talk to us since they didn’t have much other business. They thought we were from Sweden (or maybe it was just me with my blonde hair and blue eyes). I was actually proud that we didn’t portray the typical American image. I don’t think the rest of the world really thinks too highly of us right now, and I don’t blame them. Hopefully, we are doing our part to show that all of us are not actually “ugly Americans”.
Late night place to eat, yummy pizza and friendly people!
It was early, but we called it a night. This seems to be a recurring theme. We must be getting old. This night definitely required earplugs. There was quite a bit of street activity. Tomorrow we will walk down to the Mediterranean.
