Salzburg I (Ben)

We got up at 6:00 am again today and followed the same schedule as the day before, except this time we packed up all our stuff. Again, when I left my room, my roommate was sleeping. I roomed with this guy for two nights, yet I never saw him awake.

We walked to the train station, boarded our train, and arrived in Salzburg in the late morning. There was quite a change in weather from Vienna to Salzburg. It was misty and the temperature was about 50 degrees.

We scoped out some hotels and found Pension Zum Jungen Fuchs near the city center. Our room was Є45 per night and it was like heaven. There was a large room with hardwood floors, a few homey touches, and a king-sized bed (actually, it was two singles put together) with two large, puffy comforters. The duvets on the comforters were stark white. Our room overlooked a pedestrian street and across was a large cathedral with a clock tower. A few minutes later we heard a loud “Dong! Dong! Dong!” Hopefully that won’t happen all night.

After getting settled, we ate lunch at a café that was decorated with a bunch of clown stuff. It was kind of freaky, but the wiener schnitzel was good. After lunch, we walked around the city and window-shopped. The central part of Salzburg is very touristy, but still very pleasant and beautiful. Oh, and there is an H&M, of course.

The Salzburg city center straddles a river and is squeezed between two large hills on either side. On the top of one hill is a fortress. The hillside up to the fortress rises drastically from the city and it appears that the fortress is almost hovering over the city. We climbed the hill. As noted in a previous blog post, we love to torture our legs. At the top we were rewarded with amazing views of Salzburg.

As we made our way around the fortress, we discovered magnificent mountain vistas to the south of the city. This place is beautiful!

Oh, and Darcy is weird as always and decided to do yoga poses on the back of a bull statue.

We climbed down from the fortress and stopped over at Zipfer’s beer hall for supper. Mmmm… beer and comfort food.

The rest of the evening we spent doing some more window shopping, taking care of some Internet business, and wandering around. We returned to our hotel early as our puffy comforters were calling our names. I think we will rent bikes tomorrow.
