We checked out of our hotel and rode our bikes toward the train station. I missed a turn and we ended up on some busy rode. It was quite a challenge with our full packs. We eventually found the station and returned our bikes.
While waiting to board our train, I saw a barbershop and decided to get my beard trimmed (sorry Peter and Steele, but don’t worry, we can still have a mustache party when I get back). I feel like a new man!
We arrived in Munich late morning and found a hotel near the station. We checked in, got settled, and went out to explore the town.
Darcy’s aunt has a friend that lives in Munich who gave us a whole bunch of things to do and not to do. She even created an itinerary of the best order in which to do things. We used the list as a guide, but switched up the order a little bit (sorry friend!).
We started by walking over to Marinplatz, then to Vektualienmarkt. Vektualienmarkt is a large market selling all sorts of fresh food items. It also contains a small beer garden. We were hungry and thirsty, so we decided to search out the famous Hofbräuhaus (beer hall).

The Hofbräuhaus was a little more touristy than the beer hall we went to in Salzburg, but it was fun all the same. We sat in the beer garden under a canopy of large, leafy trees. There was a small brass band playing some music and this drunk guy kept making this piercing whistling sound. Oh well, I guess this is a wild and crazy beer hall, so I can’t complain.

I ordered a dunkel (dark beer) and a “mixed Bavarian plate”. Darcy had a regular beer and a salad. My plate was filled with a bunch of different meat cuts. I guess that takes care of my protein intake for the week.

As we were eating, two ladies next to us got up to leave. One of them was older and struggled a bit to get up. She staggered by our table and said something to Darcy in German. Darcy shrugged her shoulders to indicate she didn’t understand. The other lady spoke up. “She said she’s not drunk, she just has a bad leg.” We all laughed.

After a few beers (half liters this time), we decided to leave. On our way out, we were looking for the restrooms and I was approached by a man wearing a traditional Bavarian dress with Great Britain flag knickers and a crazy joker’s hat. “Gutten Tag!” he said with a thick British accent. “Would you please sit down and have a drink?” as he directs me to a table.
“Sorry, we are on our way out,” I responded.
“Well, at least have a seat so I can win this bet,” he whispers.
I complied and a large table of about twenty British hooligans erupted in cheers and laughter. We used the restrooms and on our way out I saw the same guy trying to entice an older gentleman to a table. He didn’t look like he was going to comply.

Oh, I forgot to mention that we also visited the Frauenkirche Cathedral and went to the top of one of the towers.

After the Hofbräuhaus, we checked out the shops on the pedestrian-only Kaufingerstrauss, then stocked up on some supplies at a drug store. The drug store sold wine, so we purchased a cheap red. On our way back to the hotel, we picked up some Chinese take out. We ate the take out and drank the cheap red wine in our shitty hotel room. We are pretty classy!
